What is Yoga?
Yoga is an ancient science and philosophy that originated from India. In Sanskrit, yoga means “to yoke” or “to bind.” It is a systemic approach to uniting mind, body, and soul. According to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, “yoga is the calming of the roaming fluctuations of the mind.” You may think of yoga as something you do on your mat, but there are actually 8 limbs to the Yoga practice that create the entire system. The asana practice is just one of these.
People begin yoga for a number of reasons, but ultimately it is to relieve some sort of suffering in the mind or body. The benefits may not be the same for everyone, as everyone is on their own path. You may see improvement in strength, flexibility, improved range of motion, and stamina. Additionally, it can reduce stress and bring clarity.
