Be Mindful of Your Senses: A Daily Practice

What we consume affects how we feel, how we show up, and how we live.

There was a time when I didn’t pay much attention to the loudness of life—the constant noise, the distractions, the overstimulation. But after deepening my yoga practice and connecting to what really matters, I began to realize how much our external environment shapes our internal world.

I remember a night not too long ago when I stepped into a loud venue, eager to “socialize more.” The music was so overpowering that I couldn’t hear anyone speak. It hit me: why do we fill our spaces with so much noise? Does it numb us, distract us, or even keep us from truly feeling? I left quickly.

Yoga is about sensory withdrawal and cultivating self-awareness, but it’s also about creating an environment where you can thrive. Every aspect of life, the people we surround ourselves with, the content we consume, the noise we allow, impacts our well-being. So, I ask myself: What am I letting in?

Am I choosing experiences that uplift me?
Do the songs, shows, and accounts I follow support my peace and purpose?
How am I filling my space—physically and mentally?

These questions matter more than ever. For me, that’s why I don’t play music with lyrics in my yoga classes. Music can unexpectedly trigger memories and take us out of the present moment. I want my students to stay anchored in their practice, free from external distractions.

I encourage you to be mindful of what you consume. It’s not just about the food you eat, it’s about the content you expose yourself to through your senses. Take a digital detox, unfollow accounts that no longer resonate with you, and remember: You have the power to filter what you let into your life.

Slow Flow with Sam Reynolds at the Miami Beach Fitness Festival

On Sunday, March 26, I had the pleasure of teaching the final community class, Slow Flow & Stretch, to the 2023 Hyrox Miami Beach Fitness Festival participants and to the public.

It was a great way to end spring break on Miami Beach!

Journey to Colombia: Wellness with the Xol Foundation

As part of a service trip with the Xol Foundation, I was invited to attend and be a part of a community wellness day in one of the villages outside of Cali, Colombia set high in the mountains.

Yoga at the Kampong: Where Yoga Meets Conservation

Having an immense appreciation for nature and an interest in conservation, I partnered with the Kampong, part of the non-profit, National Tropical Botanical Gardens to offer yoga classes in a peaceful sanctuary outside of Miami city life. Last Saturday, I held another class to support this 9-acre tropical estate in Coconut Grove. The community of Kampong yogis is growing!

The next weekend class will be held Saturday, February 23 at 10:30am. To register, sign up online. I’ve also partnered with Xol Coffee and they will be returning to provide free coffee and light bites.

In addition to weekend classes, I’m launching regularly scheduled classes beginning in February. An all levels flow style class will be held on Wednesdays at 9:30am. The first class on February 13 will be free for members and a special intro rate of $15 applies to non-members.

The Kampong is the former home of famed botanist, Dr. David Fairchild. It is on the list of historic homes in Miami and contains a beautiful collection of artifacts and plants from around the world. Dr. Fairchild is credited for bringing over 30,000 plant species and produce (e.g. avocados) to the United States.

If you’re interested in becoming a member of the Kampong, you’ll receive unlimited park access, event invites, and discounted yoga class. To become a member, apply here.

See you at the next class!
